In the past, it was the dreaded interim between being useful and being dead, but now it’s the culmination – the pinnacle, the goal we all work towards. The lucky (or clever) ones retire at 40, the rest of us wish we could. Because retiring is not ‘sitting on the stoep’ – it’s travelling, taking up scuba diving, or doing whatever you want to! That stage of life – between, say, 50 and 70 – at which you finally stop being a wage slave and start living for yourself, your family and the people you care about is a truly magical time. You’ve learned enough about life to avoid the mistakes most of us make in our teens and twenties, and you’ve lived enough to know what you want to do with the rest of your life. That’s why we’ve called this edition ‘retirement living'. It’s about achieving the long-dreamed- of goal of finding a balance between leisure and income, between possessions and responsibilities, between stuff and freedom, and – most importantly – between being with people because you have to, or being with them because you want to. We have, of course, explored some great places you may want to move to in retirement – maybe on the coast, maybe overseas, maybe a multi- generational estate so you can be close to the grandchildren. But choosing a retirement community is not a decision to be made rashly, or quickly, so we’ve included what to look for when choosing, and – because many people don’t really understand it – we’ve unpacked the concept of life right in our article on Evergreen. Financial planning is important at any stage in life, but it takes on a particular urgency once you’re retired, because retirement is only the joy it’s supposed to be if you are financially secure. So we’ve had a look at some clever ways of funding your retirement – and also some clever ways developers can fund the construction of retirement estates, to ensure that you can afford to move there. And, while it’s all very well being upbeat, we have also looked at the scary side of getting older because, as we age, we may need different types of care. But – more interestingly – as our communities and populations age, we may need completely different ways of living. We really are ageing better – humans are living much longer, are healthier much longer, and generally we have better lives. If you don’t believe that, see how some truly astonishing athletes – including our own awesome black knight, Gary Player, and our delightful galloping granny Mavis Hutchinson – just keep on going. And they’re not that unusual – they’re just the more high profile of the many, many, very active octogenarians and even nonagenarians. So, bring it on, and start living your best life.
