FROM THE TEAM FOUNDER/CEO Jaimé-Lee Gardner It’s spring. [email protected] COO/PUBLISHER Louise Martin [email protected] GROUP SALES DIRECTOR Michele Jones EDITOR Jennifer Stern GOLF EDITOR John Cockayne SENIOR SUBEDITOR Birds are singing, leaves are budding and there’s new life everywhere. The Western Cape is just vrot with daisies and other colourful flowers. So we follow the flowers and the whales down to the very southern tip of Cape Town, and find out what makes the South Peninsula so special. And we find a number of communities within a community – a place where people habitually surf before work (read that however you like), commute by skateboard, and probably own a pair of closed shoes, but they’re ‘in a cupboard somewhere’. It’s the perfect place to celebrate the joie de vivre that is spring. But spring is also a time for tidying up and ‘getting the house in order’. And that’s not just getting rid of the physical clutter. It’s about re- examining old ideas, being open to fresh new ones, and embracing every aspect of being alive – regardless of how much it may challenge your preconceptions. So we’ve also taken a look at some hard issues – how we handle technology, financial planning, reputation management and community conflict; how we keep our residents happy, and how we cope when they are not – especially if that unhappiness extends ‘beyond the wall’ into the law courts and/or into cyberspace. So, throw off those heavy winter woollies. It’s time to stretch your wings, explore new territory, and frolic a bit – rediscover the joy of living. And rediscover the joy of living in an estate. And spring is a time of change, so it’s also a time to embrace change, to future-proof our estates, to bravely take cognisance of the issues of global warming, and – generally – to take practical steps to ensure our world remains as fabulous as possible. Thea Grobbelaar CREATIVE Peter Batistich AMBASSADORS Jenelle Oosthuizen But to really do that, you have to understand what makes an estate tick. So we’ve chatted to managers and board members of some of the best estates in the country to find out how they keep things fresh and appealing – how they manage to replicate the joys of spring all year long.
