South African rapper AKA cemented
himself on the musical map after
releasing his second studio album,
Levels, in June. The follow-up to his
debut release, Altar Ego, the album was
certified gold in June 2015. Having sold
well over 20, 000 copies in less than a
year after being released, peaking at
No. 1 on the iTunes South African chart
a day after its release and received
numerous nominations, the album won
a large number of awards, including four
at the 2014 SA Hip Hop Awards (Best
Male, Video of the Year for Congratulate
and Best Collaboration for Run Jozi
– Godly). The song Congratulate had
AKA nominated for three awards at the
Channel O Africa Music Video Awards,
including Most Gifted Hip Hop and
Most Gifted Video of the Year, winning
the former and, at the 14th annual
Metro FM Music Awards, he received
six nominations and walked away with
Best Collaboration for the song All Eyes
On Me.

to Cape Town and Mynie became a
founding member of the Claude Larson
Singers. This developed into a duo
called Mynie & Jan, before she went
solo on the invitation of Albie Venter
of EMI-Brigadiers and later signed with
Moonshine Records and formed her
own music-publishing Mailbox Music.
She moved to Johannesburg, joined
an exclusive jingle and session singers’
team and sang in English, Zulu, Sotho
and Afrikaans for the very first multiracial TV advert, Mobil’s ‘YOU ARE
NO. 1’. She’s represented her country
in three international music festivals,
has performed with Josh Groban and
Diana Ross and toured SA with Michael
Bublè in 2007. European star Dana
Winner recorded one of Mynie’s songs
on Ergens in mijn Hart, which went
platinum within the first month.
