For some, the gender divide is not due to a lack of
opportunity and female role models( like Delia,
Nigella, Jenny Morris and Siba Mtongana for example)
but simply because women do not actually want to
be there.

For Margot, the challenge came in the form of
being taken seriously. “In the beginning, it was a
constant struggle to gain respect from the people and
businesses I dealt with. I had to fight hard to get the
right quality produce but with time and consistency it
got easier.”

“Female chefs simply have different needs and desires
going into life. My question is why does a female
chef have to be in a restaurant to be achieving? A
restaurant is either in your blood or not,” concludes
Jackie.
Regardless of opinion, there are plenty of top female
chefs out there and whilst not all are in restaurant
kitchens, those who are there are finally getting the
recognition they so rightly deserve.

Guest House and Restaurant in the Wilderness which
she started 15 years ago. “It is definitely a hard
industry for women because of the long, unfriendly
hours, but women in the industry should know that
it can happen for them. I think women are excellent
head chefs because we are so good at multitasking.
Juggling family life, two children and school with the
pressures of a business is the constant challenge for
me.”
