creative thinking. This begins from the
day a three-month-old enters the gates
of a Curro Castle nursery school, our
solid foundation stage, to the triumphant
moment when a group of Grade 12
adolescents stand up to receive their
Matric results. These are the learners
who have chosen the walls they wish to
adorn with windows and doors, designed
the corridors through which they will pass
to achieve their goals, and erected roofs
to shelter their dreams and ambitions.
Some might go on to our Embury Institute
for Teacher Education, where they will
take their education to greater levels of
complexity.
Curro works on the principle that the
school is a community. This is the space
within which children will learn how to
work and play together. They will spend
their time here and learn more than
how to understand and use maths;
they will reach beyond the grasp of the
shaping forces of history and they will
delve deeper into the intricate molecules

of chemistry and the mystery of biology.
They will discover how to use language
and appreciate fine writing; they will
turn that knowledge into curiosity, asking
relevant questions, and provide succinct
answers and, most importantly, they will
be challenged to think.
Just as architectural design creates a
better ‘flowing’ community through
problem solving, Curro Holdings believes
its knowledgeable environment, and
not simply just our school buildings and
curricular, will result in a better society.
The formal knowledge Curro’s learners
acquire through the challenges of hard
study goes hand in hand with the informal
social graces of empathy and kindness
they glean from their school community
– their knowledge environment.
That’s the beauty of Curro’s architectural
design: it prepares learners to become
good citizens.
