Educating Icons
Speak to any parent about what they
want most for their children and
invariably the answer will be good
health and excellent education.
These are the iconic pillars upon
which mothers and fathers, wanting
only the best for their children,
build the future of their families. In
celebrating their 75th anniversary,
a successful international magazine
recently selected what they
considered to be the 75 ‘most
influential’ people of the 21st
century. The aim was to showcase
iconic (defined by the magazine as
being determined, defiant, earnest,
brilliant, philanthropic and spacegoing) people who, in the editor’s
opinion, would be ‘writing the first
chapter of the rest of our lives’.
Needless to say, the list was pretty
eccentric in nature. Such lists tend
to reveal fascinating truths about
the world we live in and there were
some particularly noteworthy details
on this specific list; for example, only
one of the individuals listed was
a Nobel Prize winner and only 18
were business owners. Yet, most
surprising of all was that only 11 of
