sophistication and we are seeing larger
groups of adults making this a day out to
remember – from groups of ten to those
in excess of fifty – it seems the more is
indeed the merrier.”
The MC for the afternoon is South Africa’s
infamous comedian, Marc Lottering,
and he keeps us all in stitches while a
succession of local bands serenade guests
who break bread with random strangers,
pop champagne corks, collectively wave
napkins and joyously dance the evening
away.
A fully stocked bar serves a wide selection
of local wines, champagnes and soft
drinks, and stands selling fresh oysters and
cheese and fruit platters are also available
to the 2000-strong crowd. “We never
wish to increase this number,” Stephan
tells me. “The Paris event has somewhere
near to 15, 000 people attending and,
while this is great, it takes away the
exclusive feel. We want the Grand White
to remain a selective yet sophisticated
gathering.” Peace, love, happiness – it’s
all in abundance, from the releasing of
a dozen white doves at the very start to
the collective white spectacle gathered
to marvel at the people of this beautiful
city. I get to know a friendly couple sitting
to my left, share ice cubes with a family
behind me and am offered to partake in a
spectacular picnic ensemble, resplendent
with emerald-green champagne flutes
and sparkly table line, by a group of young
girls to the right of me.
There is a powerful sense of collective
happiness and this is partly due to the
colour scheme, explains Stephan. “The
colour white is a clean, fresh one that is
loved by most, especially in the summer.
It radiates a positive and peaceful vibe,
while the touch of green is a nod to our
green footprint, which we take very
seriously. Our partnership with Mpact
means all the rubbish from the day is
recycled and guests are encouraged to
use the recycling bins provided. Working
with Greenpop, we will also be planting a
tree for every hundred people attending,
creating a sustainable future for all.”
Like all good parties, the momentum
escalates after the sun goes down. People
wave sparklers and frolic under green
lights while a flame eater takes centre
stage and mesmerises a heady crowd.
Young and old, men and women, friends
and strangers – everyone is on the dance
floor, carefree, happy and joyful.
The future for the Grand White Dinner
looks just as bright as a white light – with
events of a similar nature in Germany,
Brazil, Miami and London already
planned for the coming year and more
and more countries wanting to come to
the party too.
The Grand White Dinner takes place at an
undisclosed location in Johannesburg on
Saturday 18 April 2015 and in Durban on
Saturday 25 April 2015.
