Essential Install | CEDIA
Designing The Future
CEDIA outlines some of the ways its courses are
helping installers meet the demands of the expanding
and evolving smart home market.
An efficient, ultra-modern smart home requires
a well-designed integrated residential electronic
system. CEDIA understands that for this to be
possible, designer skills should be a core focus
for every company practising in the home
technology industry. To help fulfil this, CEDIA
offers a number of courses that focus on lighting
design, home cinema design and system design.
Lighting The Way

Lighting control can be a profitable area for
home technology professionals. However,
systems need to be designed, installed and
documented correctly for long-term reliability.
Recognising the importance and increased
market demand for lighting design and energy
conserving solutions, CEDIA offers this two-day
Lighting Design Package to help installers offer
the best application of lighting to clients.
Day one – Introduction to Lighting
Fundamentals – will take students through
the theory of lighting and the science behind
the ‘art’ of lighting before moving onto more
practical sessions. In accordance with current
electrical standards, attendees will test
different dimming control types, including
resistive dimming, LED,DALI and DMX.
Building on the lighting fundamentals
discussed on day one, day two provides a
more in-depth understanding on lighting.
Residential Lighting Control focusses on the
practical applications of lighting control,
including common pitfalls to avoid, different
types of dimming available and regulation
and safety standards – BS7671 and Part
L compliance. Using hands-on sessions,
attendees will leave this course with a strong
understanding of the complete technical
solution for lighting control systems.
Sketching Out Cinemas
As a cornerstone technology of the residential
installation market, home cinema is a common
feature within the home technology industry.
The technical design of a high performance
home cinema is not just about a series of
subjective decisions. For every parameter,
there is a standard that should be achieved
in order to offer a truly immersive and
secure home entertainment experience. The
Home Cinema Designer Package focusses
completely on the art of home cinema design.
Day one – Home Cinema for Designers
– explores the principals involved in highperformance design, and the science and
calculations required to create a complete
design for both audio and video.
During the Home Cinema Design
Workshop on day two, attendees will
encompass the entire design process,
examine the industry standards and insight
into designing home cinemas and how to
implement the industry standards engineering
calculations, rather than subjective guesswork.
The next available dates to enrol onto
CEDIA’s two-day Home Cinema Designer
Package are December 6, 2016 and April 12,
2017, both held at the headquarters of CEDIA
member, Pulse Cinemas, Stansted.
Back To School
For the ultimate immersion into integrated
residential electronic system design, CEDIA’s
five-day Designer School and Certification
Exam course, which includes an ESC-D
certification exam, will formalise attendees
existing knowledge and focus on developing
a structured, scalable and profitable design
methodology. The course is suitable for
individuals who are either CEDIA ESC-T certified,
or who have at least three years industry
experience. It is also excellent preparation for
the CEDIA ESC-D Designer certification exam.
The course is split into five days as follows:
Day 1 – Customer Relations and Needs Analysis
Day 2 – Design Process and Documentation
Day 3 – The Principles of Project Management
Day 4 – Sub Systems Design and Integration
Day 5 – The ESC-D certification exam
City & Guilds
The above courses form part of CEDIA’s City
& Guilds Smart Home Designer track. Those
participants who successfully complete the
training programme and pass the ESC-D
certification exam are awarded a City & Guilds
accredited certification.
