Arcam acquired by Harman
Arcam managing
director, Charlie
Brennan, will
remain in place as
will the rest of the
Arcam team
Arcam is now offi cially part of Samsung, having been offi cially acquired by the company’s subsidiary Harman. The
British Hi-Fi and AV manufacturer will further bolster Harman’s Lifestyle Audio division, which also includes AKG, Harman
Kardon, Infi nity, JBL, Mark Levinson and Rebel.
Samsung has been on a hiring spree in the home audio space as of late, with the company’s biggest purchase
being that of Harman International. At the time, many speculated that Samsung was acquiring Harman primarily for its
expertise in the automotive industry.
Since then it has become clear that Harman’s audio divisions are also an important aspect of the acquisition,
especially given the fi rm’s rumoured smart home speaker is set to concentrate on sound quality, something Harman’s
brands are known for.
While Arcam is set to be included into the Samsung family of products through Harman, business is expected to
remain as usual.
In an email to customers, Arcam’s director of sales and marketing, Scott Campbell, said: “Arcam and Harman share a
like-minded passion for bringing the highest quality sound into people’s lives.
“Harman recognises the value and potential of Arcam’s people, technologies and brands and we expect the
combination will deliver growth opportunities and benefi ts to our customers. We believe this is an unprecedented
opportunity to grow Arcam’s engineering capabilities and extend its product reach into new markets.”
The terms of the arrangement between the two companies has yet to be disclosed, although users could be the
overall benefi ciaries from this acquisition. Samsung has the resources necessary to invest heavily in its brands, while its
position as the world’s top TV manufacturer could lead to better quality TV audio.
Søren Majlund, commercial director EUN, Harman Lifestyle Audio Division, said: “We expect the combination will
deliver growth opportunities and benefi ts to our customers. We believe this is an unprecedented opportunity to grow
Arcam’s engineering capabilities and extend its product reach into new markets.”
It’s been announced that Arcam’s leadership team will remain in Cambridge, while its sales and distribution channel
is unlikely to be touched by the deal.
