Future Tech Trends | What Is HDR ?
The main benefit for viewers of HDR is a more natural looking image

How HDR Will Control Our Vision Of The Future

Andy Jones , category manager at Invision UK , explains the technology and how it will affect the home entertainment industry in the coming years .
There are several different types of High Dynamic Range ( HDR ); the most relevant are HDR10 , Dolby Vision and HLG ( Hybrid-Log Gamma ), the more common between them is HDR10 , the format which is available on Ultra HD Blu-ray and so far the larger number of display products .
So why is the technology important and why has it been in the tech news so much lately ? Simple , it ’ s important because it permits the customer to see in a more correct way the video contents , in higher brightness and in a wider colour gamut , than has ever been possible before . Our industry is about offering the very best experiences and so every installer should make themselves aware of the benefits this technology can offer .
In particular , viewers will be able to notice image details in low lit scenes are much more visible and the highlight reflections on shiny surfaces are much closer to the images we are used to seeing in the real world , bringing a new level of experience into the home and providing a strong sales story for new projects and upgrades to existing ones .
In order to bring about this next generation technology , HDR requires very different video behaviour , migrating away from from gamma curves to the SMPTE ST2084 approach used for Dolby Vision and HDR10
