Sky Q has made several big announcements this month
Sky Q Set To Add Atmos And Voice Control , But Drop The Dish
Sky Q subscribers will be able to enjoy films with Dolby Atmos by the end of 2017 , Sky has confirmed . That won ’ t be the only new feature on Sky Q this year either , as voice control is set for the company ’ s new subscription TV service .
Sky is looking to keep pace with rivals like Virgin Media which already supports Dolby Atmos , however no set date has been announced at this time , although Sky confirms it will be this year .
Voice control functionality is also on the menu for 2017 , although Sky hasn ’ t yet proposed how voice control will work on Sky Q . It ’ s likely that users will be able to change channels , modify the volume and turn the Sky Q on and off with their voice .
While 2017 could be seen as a big year for Sky Q in terms of features , next year could arguably be the service ’ s biggest year yet . That ’ s because Sky recently announced that it would be pivoting away from being a satellite company and instead offer Sky Q over broadband .
Sky Q will users won ’ t need to have a satellite dish come 2018 . The indications have been there for a while via services like Sky ’ s Now TV which can be accessed without a dish . It ’ s not yet clear whether Sky is ready to completely ditch its satellite TV service ; any transition is likely to be a very gradual one considering the amount of legacy systems out there . The company has stated that it plans to offer an OTT service in 2018 , but customers with poor Internet speeds will likely prefer the satellite dish .
Sky has confirmed that the new service will use a special Sky Q box adapted for broadband TV reception , rather than the App it currently uses for Now TV . It ’ s not clear if the new service will tie customers to its broadband service , however Sky will be hoping customers bundle the two for the sake of convenience . It is also not clear yet if the service will be the same as received by full Sky Q satellite customers . As for installers , with many companies still waiting to see how Sky Q beds in to make the change , this announcement will introduce further uncertainty as to what the future holds for what is still the industry ’ s preferred method of TV content delivery .
