2D / 3D ANIMATOR
Although you might be called upon to animate a 3D spaceship landing or a dancing character frame-by-frame in a 2D space, for the most part, Animators in the VFX industry are responsible for breathing life into CG characters.
It’ s a demanding, specialist role and one of the toughest aspects of CG to master. The position requires the Animator to follow a script, storyboards, perhaps even lip-syncing to dialogue and giving a virtual character a genuine personality.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Experience of 2D or 3D Animation Techniques. Strong drawing skills. An eye for design and artistic principles such as shape, language and colour theory. A creative spark that can be translated into artistic talent. Good communication and time management skills. A feel for character, movement, anatomy and timing. An art-related or animation degree is preferable.
HOW CAN YOU GET THERE?
It is not unusual for the first role of an Animator to have little to do with animating. Many start as Runners and progress to junior roles after some time. To get started, concentrate on core concepts of life drawing and practicing timing and body mechanics.
