Porsche ran both 919 Hybrids in high down-force configuration, whereas Toyota concentrated on both low and high aero set-ups on their one car during Friday running.
Audi, which ran with low fuel but had to switch to a second chassis for the remainder of the test.
"Two to 4MJ last year was a big step, but it was the same system," explained Audi Sport Team Joest boss Ralf Juttner to Autosport.
"The new energy storage system [the lithium-ion battery that has enabled Audi to move to the 6MJ hybrid sub-class] has completely different behaviour. The recuperating and boosting needs to have a different strategy behind it, and there we are still on a learning curve."
Juttner stressed that Audi perhaps Audi wasn’t as bulletproof going into the season as we've had in some seasons".
Toyota’s technical director, Pascal Vasselon had a more rounded view of proceedings, which only served to throw up more questions than answers.
"Porsche is two tenths slower than last year and we are nearly two seconds faster, so something has changed," he said, while pointing out there is not enough evidence quite yet to "make a true comparison".
