The legacy that the name Brabham has in motorsport is a one that transcends time, as the late Sir Jack Brabham is the only man in Formula 1 history to have won the drivers’ title back in the Repco V8-powered BT19 & 20 back in 1966.
This feat is something that no one else has been able to do ever since, especially with the way that motorsport has changed over the decades, in terms of technical regulations, financial aspects and politics.
Fast forward to now, after the Brabham name was away from this family that has motorsport running through their veins, the return of this hallmark within the racing world is going back into the lions’ den.
Under the name ‘Project Brabham', the aims have been set high, which includes starting as an LMP2 team next year, with a potential of racing in Formula E as well as Formula One in the not too distant future.
David Brabham, Jack’s son, has stepped into the role as Team Principal on this new and ambitious venture, and has adopted the thinking that made his late father such a pioneer. Black Jack was a “garagista” that upset the established teams already there in Formula 1, like Scuderia Ferrari.
David is a highly-rated veteran within the racing world, having raced all across the globe in series such as Formula 1, the WEC, the American Le Mans Series, V8 Supercars ad much more, over a career that has lasted nearly 25 years.
He took time out of his busy schedule at the British Touring Car Championship finale to talk to E-Racing’s Alex Goldschmidt about the project itself, what we can expect from it and how the project will develop under the new crowd-funding scheme they have put into place.
