EQUINE | YMG Report The only real drawback was that the stud is quite far away, thus the cost of driving and accommodation was relatively high. However I do believe that the experience was worthwhile and overall extremely positive. We assisted with the full vetting of a total of 37 horses over 2 days. The experience was highly beneficial and fascinating to all of us. I would be very interested in returning next year as I feel there is still so much I could learn. National Yearling Sales Written by Heinrich Viljoen (Racehorse Portfolio) The yearling sale was held during 1 vacation day and during the week where student needed to go to class. I was there on the 23 of April and Theunis Griessel was there on the 21st of April. Dr.McGregor Stone was the Dr that I contacted to organise for students to get a lecture on sales prep by Dr.Bennie van der merwe and he said that students can go on the Monday/Tuesday and on those days there was only 1 student that could attend and the days that a lot of students could attend , the Dr said they will be under a lot of pressure from clients as it was the day of the sales. What to improve on: I think if it wasn’t in the vacation period there would have been more students that could have gone, there were a big interest from the students side to go but did not work out. What there was to learn: • I saw a lot on endoscope and learned how to use an endoscope. • The Drs showed me what x-rays need to be taken , how to take x rays and the interpretation of X-rays • How to properly handle a horse so that owners feel comfortable that you work on horse • How to perform a vet check in order to make sure horse is in proper condition to be sold Equilibrium Symposium Written by Theunis Griessel (Outgoing Chairman) On the 10th to 14th April, students were invited to attend the Equine Symposium at Equine-Librium College in Plettenberg Bay. When we arrived, we were shown around the beautiful College campus. It was great to see how it was set up to provide a holistic approach to looking after animals. The Equine Clinic run by Dr Tom Ovendale had all the diagnostic and treatment modalities available which could combine veterinary physiotherapy and veterinary expertise to manage performance horses and lameness. The equine clinic formed part of the Equine High Performance Centre which would assess horses from head to toe and help with performance and rehabilitation. 38 • Equine Health Update •
