YMG Report | EQUINE his contributions to the profession. It is always a fantastic evening to start rounding off an exciting and eye-opening congress. Without the continued support and generous sponsorship, SAEVA YGM would not be able to give this incredible experience to a selected group of students. Our greatest thanks go out to The South African Equine Veterinary Association, Arco360, Stride Distributions, Anne Mullins, VetLink and Midlands Veterinary Wholesaler. We truly appreciate all you have done for us. Callaho Pre-Purchase Examinations Written by Rebecca Marshall (BVSc IV) Attendees: Kenja Millar, Luis Velssco, Samantha Di Domenico, Rebecca Marshall On April the 2nd 2019 we eagerly awoke with great anticipation for the day that lay ahead. Kenja, Luis, Sam and myself were so excited to start the vetting of the Callaho warmblood horses for the upcoming auction. We were unsure what exactly lay ahead but we were not disappointed. Dr Niko Hendrikz arrived and made us feel very comfortable. On the first day we mostly did flexion tests, and resting clinical exams including conformation evaluation. We also got to see how the stable yard runs day to day, as well as chat to the working riders. As avid horse riders it was very interesting to get an inside look into such a high standard stud, as well as the hands on veterinary experience we gained. Day two presented more flexion tests, clinical examinations, and lots of lunging. We learned a lot about gait evaluation while lunging on both hard and soft surfaces, as well as evaluation under saddle. It was such a good experience to see such a wide variety of horses, and to gain valuable, hands-on expertise. We quickly became proficient at taking heart rates, flexion tests and evaluating normal and abnormal gaits. • Volume 22 Issue 01 | March 2020 • 37
