SAEVA YMG committee also used this time to get in
contact with Vets or delegates who would be able to
come and present talks at Onderstepoort throughout
the year.
Day 2 started with rusks and coffee at the Lake Panic
bird hide and some quick game viewing before lectures.
Lectures covered a range of topics including African
Horse Sickness and West Nile Virus as well as Renal
Disease and Cardiovascular problems. A very informative
lecture on Insurance took place in the afternoon where
we were able to learn a lot of the ins and outs of equine
insurance, and what the role of the Vet is when a horse
is insured. We spent the evening braaing on our own as
students which was a welcome relief for the introverts
among us. It was also great to bond and get to know
each other better.
Saturday morning started early and the students were
lucky enough to sit in on the Sporthorse Subcommittee
meeting. It was a great opportunity to learn more about
the current issues facing Sporthorse vets in South Africa.
There is also a possibility of SAEVA YMG students being
trained to assist vets as testing technicians for drug tests
which is quite exciting for us.
Excitedly we headed back to Vets Camp to prepare for
the Gala Dinner. Beautifully decorated with great music
and good company, the Gala Dinner did not disappoint.
After another wonderful meal the golf winner was
announced, and an auction ensued which was also
in aid of the Australian bush fires. The Spirit of SAEVA
award was presented to Prof James Gilkerson after
he made an incredibly witty, and humorous speech.
Thereafter the students announced their mentors for
the year going forward and with all the admin taken
care of, the festivities began...
Sunday morning was quiet as many Vets had left already
but we were still presented with great lectures including
