She said that they would sponsor an event with Dr Rissa Parker if we could do all the organising. I sent out posters on the 29th of August, and asked people to sign up for the talk, as we needed numbers for the pizza that Equi-Feeds was supplying. I had 70 signups. The talk happened on the 5th of September at lunchtime (13:00-14:30). Due to the good name of Dr Parker and the promise of food, the talk was well attended. Unfortunately, quite a large percentage of the students had to leave half-way through the talk due to practicals or classes (which start at 13:45). This was unfortunate, but expected. The Nutrition 101 talk gave a brief overview of the equine GIT and feed-related issues to “spark our interest”, and then Dr Parker dove into the crux, discussing the various roughages and food components. We had a question and answer session at the end, and although there were only few students left, the interaction and engagement was tremendous, and absolutely wonderful. It was a useful event that could be held again in a couple of years, but I would suggest that the talk be kept as short as possible, as students always have commitments they cannot get out of. 40 • Equine Health Update •
