Equine Health Update EHU 2019 Issue 04 | Page 3

Editorial Welcome to the fourth edition of the EHU for 2019. The annual SAEVA Congress is fast approaching and for 2020 returns to Skukuza which has proven to be a very popular venue in recent years. We are again lucky to have some fantastic speakers for this world class venue. For this issue of the EHU we again have a number of interesting abstracts from the EVJ. The equine disease quarterly continues to give us a global overview of equine infectious diseases that are currently circulating. A continuing theme in the last few issues are the number of equine influenza cases being reported worldwide and is serves as a reminder that whilst we have not had equine influenza in South Africa for a number of years, it should always be in the back of minds given the global movement of equines. On that note the exciting news in the last month is that the long awaited EU audit of our AHS status and control measures is likely to happen early next year, hopefully paving the way for a much easier exportation protocol for our horses. This will be a much needed boost to our racing and sport horse industries. Well done to all the role players that have given their time to help facilitate this process. Our CPD article on African Horse Sickness comes from SAEVAs association with Vetstream Ltd. and the Vetlexicon Equis online resource. If you haven’t already registered for Vetlexicon Equis please remember that it is free to SAEVA members and is a fantastic online resource. Most of you will know Nicole Du Toit who now works with Chris Pearce at The Equine Dental Clinic in Dorset. They put on a fantastic cpd course at 2 venues in October and are returning early next year with a second course. I can highly recommend these courses if you have a chance to go and guarantee they will change your approach to equine dentistry. Finally for this issue we have another ECOD report summary for the beginning of 2019 which gives a useful objective overview of infectious equine diseases in South Africa. Thanks to John Grewar for putting this together for us. Thanks again to Heinrich and Madaleen at Vetlink for putting this publication together. • Volume 21 Issue 4 | December 2019 • 3
