REGIONAL NEWS BHS NEWS EAST MIDLANDS SALLY ANDREWS Diary Dates 2013 EAST MIDLANDS REGIONAL TRAINING DAYS Carriage Driving We had a terrific Carriage Driving day hosted by Bennington Carriages. Led by Sue Mart, Bennington’s UKCC Level 3 coach and her team, the group of 14 BHS members enjoyed an overview of Carriage Driving. This consisted of driving Bennington’s experienced ponies, long-reining, putting harness on and off a horse, rein handling, driving a cones course and having a go at back-stepping. Finally, and of particular interest to the gentlemen, we had a tour of the impressive workshops where the Bennington carriages are built before being shipped all around the world. This was a great day with some excellent feedback with quote of the day being “Finally my husband was persuaded that horses are fun!” BHS Fellow, Jo Winfield presented an inspiring regional training day at Derby College’s Broomfield Hall. The day was aimed at trainers and exam candidates intending to take their BHS Stages 1-3 exams and mainly concentrated on flatwork, lungeing and jumping. Comparisons between the standards required and expected at each stage were discussed and very capably demonstrated by willing student riders from the college. Pictured with the BHS jump, which was sponsored by BHS Derbyshire are Jo Winfield, FBHS with Broomfield Hall’s Equine Centre Manager and lecturer, Stephanie Meadows along with some student riders, training day attendees and equine students from the College. Other regional training events have included a PTT Exam Training day and a PTT Portfolio Training day, presented by Becky Johnson, BHSI. Both these well-attended days were aimed at students who are working towards joining the BHS Register of Instructors.
