White Horse TREC Group enjoyed a weekend in the sunshine at Prestwold Hall on 18th and 19th May, running a busy two days of competition for 70 competitors at all levels from newcomers to current and aspiring GB squad members. After being rained off last year, the organisers were somewhat relieved to be able to go ahead this year, and everyone agreed that this superb new venue near Loughborough was well worth the wait. The first day of mounted orienteering saw the level 2 competitors complete a 20km route fully within the Prestwold Estate, with perfect going on the field edges and bridleways giving the riders plenty of opportunity to canter, with carefully placed tickets for them to note down along the way checking that they were keeping an eye on the map as well as the scenery! ventured further afield to East Leake and onto the West Leake Hills, completing 32km and 40km respectively. These riders also completed more technical sections, testing their ability to plot grid references and ride to the correct points, and to navigate a 3km section without a map using a series of compass bearings and distances. The second day, the control of paces and PTV, made use of the cross country course and natural features of the park. A lengthy and challenging course was popular with the riders and produced some very good scores and happy faces! Special mention must go to Bev Stevens and Steph Davis, who completed the course dressed in pink tutus to raise money for Race for Life. Winner of the level 4 class was Sarah Thurnell on her Connemara x Arab pony, Wooda, a first win at this level for this pair, who won the POR (orienteering) phase and managed to keep their lead
against stiff competition in only Wooda’s second season of TREC. Full results below.
