New bit the Sprenger HO Weymouth
Tried & Tested
Sprenger knows how sensitive horses’ mouths can be and with that in mind, they have developed the brand new Sprenger HO Weymouth. The ideal bit to introduce your horse to a double bridle, the new Sprenger HO Weymouth has a 14mm width, slanting mouthpiece and a smooth rounded port, which is angled forward to allow even tongue pressure. The lower cheeks are short at 5cm so only slight pressure is needed for them to come into action – but they are kind in soft hands! The slanting mouthpiece also encourages harmony between the rider’s hand and the horse’s mouth, providing a rel axed and secure contact and creating a more harmonious partnership. With such a good relationship with your horse’s mouth, you’ll have no trouble fine-tuning the more tricky dressage movements and improving your scores. Made with an Aurigan mouthpiece, the Sprenger HO Weymouth encourages the horse to chew and salivate, helping him to soften his jaw and work in a more relaxed way. What’s more, Aurigan quickly oxidizes to produce a sweet taste that horses love and accept willingly. Weymouth slightly the next time I showed the horse in them and he did not go as well, so have dropped it back down a hole. Fitting is extremely important, of course. I use a traditional lip-strap with the curb chain, which is not tight at all but just rests in the chin-groove. The top rein of my bridle is plaited and I tend to try to keep this contact more than the bottom rein. Still hands are vital in trot, which I work hard at maintaining. In walk and canter, I try to allow the horse’s head more movement, moving my elbows with his neck. The curb is used gently to ask for more lift or control of pace, along with the relevant leg, back and seat aids. Bits of this quality make me even more conscious of my own riding and make me strive to ride as well as I possibly can! The slip-head on a double bridle should be fastened on the offside. The bits should Sprenger Weymouth & bridoon
sit comfortably against each other in the horse’s mouth. The measurement from side-to-side and also the thickness of the two bits are variables which need to be correct to achieve the right fit. Not every horse accepts the double bridle and some take time to get used to it, whereas others make the transition from snaffle to double easily

These bits are state-of-the-art and look superb on a show bridle. They are very refined and provide a lightness of feel and amazing accuracy on a well-schooled horse with a light mouth. I used them on my schoolmaster and he did extremely well in the show ring. The judge commented on the horse’s ‘manners to burn’ and lovely way of going. I raised the

The stallion, Roseberry Model (Welsh Section B) ridden by Lucinda Craven and our granddaughter, five-year-old Chloe Heathcote on her Dartmoor, Springwater Nijinsky, in the Lead Rein M & M, both qualified at the same show for HOYS. Our other winner is Roseberry Sir Henry, a 148cms Show Pony, ridden by Rebecca Harvey who,
amongst his successes to date this year, has also won two classes at the Royal Windsor Show. After a late start, all our foals have now arrived safely and we have a good crop of all colt foals ranging from 128cms to 153cms Show Hunter Ponies and Hack foals.
