High level competition and a successful education is a combination that is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain as the pressure on students and competitors increases. However it doesn’t always have to be this way as current University of Leicester student and Horse Rider Charlotte Barry shows, there can be a happy medium between studying and riding. Charlotte, who is currently studying for a Masters in History after gaining a 2:1 in her Undergraduate Degree, is living proof of how the balance can be gained between further education and the pressures of producing successful horses. Charlotte began as most young riders do, at the local riding clubs at weekends in a relaxed environment. However as her interest in producing quality horses grew, the natural progression into firstly GCSE exams then A-Levels and eventually University study provided a problem that many young aspiring riders encounter in their forays into the world of horse riding and other sports. However the way in which Charlotte has overcome this potential problem is by implementing a simple formula that can be replicated by all teenagers that face this situation. Time management is a big part of how Charlotte has managed to divide her work up between challenging History essays, exams and, of course, the dreaded Dissertation (which can break the resolve of many students who don’t have to worry about how well they will ride at the weekend). Exactly how this successful division of time can be achieved is the key question and the answer to this most compelling of dilemmas is quite simply ‘discipline’.
