Giving Nature a Home: The RSPB’s Biggest Ever Campaign
As Europe’s largest wildlife conservation charity, the RSPB is passionate about the natural environment and is concerned that, despite the proven positive effects that contact with the natural world has on children’s physical and mental health, personal and social development, and even academic achievements and life chances, the proportion of children playing out in natural spaces has dropped by as much as 75% over the last thirty to forty years. Children who don’t value and respect nature when they’re young are less likely to see the importance of protecting the natural environment when they’re older – which will have catastrophic consequences for wildlife. In response to this, and the publication of the groundbreaking State of Nature[i] report prepared by 25 wildlife organisations, including the RSPB, which revealed that 60 per cent of the wildlife species studied have declined over recent decades including starlings, hedgehogs, some butterflies and ladybirds, the RSPB has launched its biggest ever campaign. Giving Nature a Home is urging the nation to provide a place for wildlife in their own gardens and outside spaces in a bid to halt the decline in habitat and species. Gardens and paddocks provide a valuable lifeline for species like toads and bees, which are struggling to find homes in the wider countryside. By involving children, parents and grandparents Giving Nature a Home also aims to engage younger generations in valuing wildlife and enjoying quality outdoorsy time.
