Big Sister House Project
The aim of the Big Sister project was to trial a home
that had been designed to incorporate technologies
not previously brought together in one single house.
Building on our knowledge of cutting edge energy
efficient homes, we wanted to challenge current
knowledge and behaviours in the home in order to
create a living environment that was as energy efficient
as possible, but also employed assistive technology
that could be extended as the needs of the occupant
changed.
In addition to employing the latest energy technology
to reduce the cost of heating and and impacts of fuel
poverty, the property was fitted with a KNX wiring system
to make the house “Smart”.
In this Smart home, all of the building technology is
interlinked within a single system which makes it perfect
for occupation by a household with a disabled family
member
Lights, shading, heating, ventilation, and door
communication are included, even the kitchen
appliances. It fine-tunes how the components interact to
perfectly match needs. Master controls for the building
functions – at home and remotely. It also allows easy
control of the building technology functions from a
single master device.
