What is the context? The ghost of Jackie Robinson is putting his arm around Jason Collins. Their backs are towards the viewer as they walk off. Robinson wearing his jersey, with his iconic number 42, carrying a bat and mitt. Collins is wearing his jersey as well, featuring the number 98, and is carrying a basketball. To the left of the figures is a quote by Jackie Robinson: “I am not concerned with you liking or disliking me...all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” (Fitzsimmons, 2013) That we should treat everyone with respect, no matter their race or sexual orientation. You don’t have to like the person or their beliefs, but you should still respect them as a human being. Tone of the cartoon: 1) positive or negative framing of the issue 2) framing is supportive of or opposed to supporters 3) framing is supportive of or opposed to opponents What “reality” is constructed/framed about issue? Framing with metaphors is used with in this cartoon. The cartoonist uses Jackie Robinson to compare the challenges that athletes may face regarding their race, or in Jason Collins case, his sexual orientation. Symbols: The number 42 on Robinson’s jersey: This is an iconic number that we tend to associate with Jackie Robinson. It works as an identifier. The viewer can use the number as well as the baseball attire and gear to tell that the figure is Robinson.
