Bibliography:
An Olympic runner’s torch is burned out. He is seen
stating “Uh-Oh! I need a light!” To the right of him
is a man wearing a suit, holding a burning rainbow
gay rights flag. This man is the Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin. (Darcy, 2013)
The Russian Olympic torch burned out twice while
being carried by torch bearers. (Darcy, 2013) The
cartoonist uses this cartoon as a symbol of the torch
burning out as a third time, after Russia put strict
anti-gay laws into place. He looks to be inspired by
the image captured of a man relighting the torch
after it had burned out while being carried by Shavarsh Karapetyan. (RFE/RL) He replaced the unknown man with a cartoon figure of Vladimir Putin
lighting the torch with a flaming gay rights flag.
