Dr. Kena Powell gives us an inside look at the Youth Ministry. As the director, she along with parents and volunteers help to guide and support youths in their developmental and spiritual growth. I asked Dr. Powell about herself and the youth ministry and here's what she had to say.

Please tell our readers a little about yourself:

I would describe myself as a very determined and highly motivated person. I would describe myself as a very determined and highly motivated person. I do take my job seriously but I’m able to see things in perspective and believe I’m quite easy-going to work with. I’m an optimist rather than a pessimist – but I’m also a realist and I cope well when the going gets tough; I’m very good at finding solutions to problems. Above all, I would say I’m a positive and enthusiastic person – and I relish a challenge.

I strongly feel an effective youth worker will be able to demonstrate their own relationship with God as an example for teens. It is hard to teach someone something you do not do yourself. The philosophy “Do as I do, not as I say,” doesn’t go very far with teenagers. Devotions, daily prayer time, and daily Bible reading will help you grow in your relationship with God and provide support in working in youth leadership Guided in the direction of the Bishop of the church under the Church Mission; God First, Family second and Community third. My Scholastic Motivation is to stimulate growth and development of youth ages 12-18 through academics.

Tell us about the youth ministry and the programs that are available for the youth:

We currently have 7 different Youth Ministries:

1. Real Talk - talking candidly and openly and honestly without fear of what others might think, usually for another's benefit to let them know of something that is usually hard to discuss. (Ages 12 & up)

2. Youth Sunday School (Ages 5 - 11)

3. Agape Praise Dance Ministry (Ages 12 & up)

4. Puppet Ministry (Ages 7 & up)

5. "ENFUEGO" Young Praise Dance Ministry (Ages 5 - 11)

6. Youth Council (Ages 12 & up) - The purpose of the Youth Council is to give students ownership of the youth group. Students will have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of a small group but they will also learn and develop leadership skills and the value of teamwork as they work together to accomplish goals, objectives and plan out youth events.
