Court remands Lagos banker for allegedly torturing wife to death

AN Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate ’ s Court on Wednesday remanded a Lagos banker , Olaoluwa Adejo , in the Ikoyi Prison , for allegedly poisoning and torturing his wife , Maureen , to death .

The Chief Magistrate , Mrs . O . A . Adelaja , ordered the police to duplicate the case file and forward to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice .
PUNCH Metro had reported that Olaoluwa and Maureen , who hailed from Imo State , had been married for five years and the union was blessed with three children .
Our correspondent had reported that the Lagos State indigene allegedly threatened to kill his wife during one of their disagreements at their home in the Oworonshoki area .
She was said to have packed to her mother ’ s house , but after three days , she returned for a party at her children ’ s school .
While Olaoluwa claimed that she drank local insecticide , Sniper , while at home , their five-year-old son , Richard , said his father tortured his mother and forced the insecticide down her throat .
He had said , “ I am Richard Adejo . I am five years old . My daddy beat my mummy with a belt ; machete her here ( shows arms ), machete her here ( shows legs ). He used the belt on her here ( points at face ); forced my mummy to drink otapiapia ( insecticide ). My daddy took my mummy away .

pregnant woman and five others lost their lives , while two others were injured in an auto crash along Ajebo Road , Abeokuta , Ogun State , on Tuesday , when a granite-laden Volvo truck and a Nissan Bluebird collided .
A traffic report obtained by our correspondent indicated that the accident occurred at the Mechanics Village , Ajebo Road , Abeokuta , at about 9pm .
The Public Relations Officer , Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps , Babatunde Akinbiyi , said the Nissan Bluebird had number plate , FD 638 EKY , while the Volvo truck bore

He said the casualties were all passengers in the Nissan , including the driver .
A k i n b i y i e x p l a i n e d that although the car was private , it was being used for commercial purposes when the accident occurred .
On the cause of the accident , Akinbiyi noted that the truck driver drove recklessly and lost control , forcing the vehicle to veer into the opposite lane .
The truck was said to have then collided with the oncoming Nissan Bluebird .
He said , “ The Volvo truck was coming into Abeokuta , while the Nissan car was travelling outside the capital city to Mile 6 .

Pregnant woman , five others die in Ogun crash

6.30pm , on Peluola Street , Oworonshoki , Lagos , in the Lagos Magisterial District , did kill one Maureen Adejo , aged 28 years , by beating her to death with fist blows and a belt , and also poisoning her food with a Nopex Sniper insecticide , thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 223 Cap . C17 , Vol . 3 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria , 2015 .”
The defendant ’ s plea was not taken for the offence .
The Police Prosecutor , Inspector Chinalu Uwadione , filed an application for his remand in prison .
The magistrate , during the proceeding , queried Olaoluwa for the action .
The defendant , who denied the allegation , said his wife had a mental problem and he did not know when she took the insecticide .
The magistrate said the defendant ’ s claim was doubtful .
She asked that the case file be duplicated and sent to the DPP for legal advice and ordered the defendant ’ s remand in prison .
Adelaja adjourned the case till February 28 , 2018 for legal advice .

Gunmen kill abduct

pastor , Oluwafemi Komolafe , and a yet-tobe-identified policeman attached to the Ondo State Police Command have been killed by some gunmen at O r e , B e n i n - I j e b u O d e Expressway , in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State .
Oluwafemi was a pastor in one of the popular churches in Akure , the state capital .
The pastor was said to be travelling with his son , Timilehin , an undergraduate at a private university , when the gunmen , suspected to be kidnappers , stopped them on the road on Friday .
It was gathered that the pastor was taking Timilehin back to school when they were attacked .
After shooting the pastor dead , the gunmen were said to have abducted the son .
PUNCH Metro learnt that while the operation was ongoing , a bus heading for Lagos from Port Harcourt , Rivers State , ran into the scene of the incident .
While some passengers escaped into the bush , two of them were said to have been captured by the gunmen .
T h e O n d o S t a t e Commissioner of Police , Mr . Gbenga Adeyanju , said on getting the information , the command deployed men in the area to rescue the victims .
He explained that although the police rescued the pastor ’ s son and the two passengers , one of the policemen was shot dead .
Adeyanju , who did not disclose the name of the slain policeman , identified the two passengers as Henry Popoola and Michael Osifo .
He said , “ The man ( pastor ) was travelling with his son when the kidnappers stopped them on the road . They shot the man dead and took the boy away . On getting information on the activities of the hoodlums , our men stormed the scene and engaged the gunmen in a shootout ; but they escaped . We lost one of our men who went for the operation .
“ After the incident , our men , with the assistance of the local hunters , combed the area . When we got to the kidnappers ’ den , we surrounded them . There was

He , however , said the driver of the truck fled the scene of the accident .
Akinbiyi added that the injured passengers were receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre , Idi Aba , Abeokuta , while the deceased had been deposited in the Ijaiye General Hospital mortuary , also in the capital city .
