Drink-driving policeman kills

Air of mourning pervaded Atunrase Estate , Gbagada , Lagos State , on Thursday following the death of a fresh graduate .
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim , identified as Adelowo , was crushed to death around 8pm on Wednesday at the Gbagada bus stop .
The accident was reportedly caused by the driver of a police van with number plate , RRS 317 LA .
The driver , a policeman , was said to be drunk .

The police in Imo State have arrested a man , identified as Akarauwa Eke , for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old daughter .
It was gathered that the victim , who is a primary three pupil at Baptist Nursery and Primary School , Ihiagwa , in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state , had been living with her father , along with her siblings , since her mother died in 2013 .
PUNCH Metro learnt that nobody suspected anything until the victim refused to follow her father , who had come to her school to pick her .
A resident , who spoke on condition of anonymity , said the refusal of the child to follow her father home aroused the curiosity of the people around .
He added that in the course of investigation by teachers and villagers , it was discovered that the man had allegedly been defiling her daughter at home .
A non-governmental organisation , Virgin Heart Foundation , said it was partnering Women of Divine Destiny Initiatives , an organisation owned by the wife of the governor of the state , to ensure justice for the girl .
The founder of the Virgin Hearth Foundation , Peace Dike , said the group had taken the victim to a hospital for a series of medical examinations .
Dike said , “ The suspect is in police custody . We are partnering Women Of Divine Destiny Initiatives to ensure that justice is served .
“ We are also writing to the Imo State chapter of the Federated International of Female Lawyers to get legal aid for the girl because she has been abused by someone who ought to have protected her .”
When our correspondent asked the girl what led to her being abused by her father , she merely replied , “ My father is doing me bad bad things .”
The state Police Public Relations Officer , SP Andrew Enwerem , said the state Commissioner of Police , Chris Ezike , had ordered that the matter be charged to court immediately after investigation .
“ Under the leadership of CP Ezike , such a weighty allegation will not be swept under the carpet ,” the state police spokesperson said . stated that the speeding van was heading towards Oshodi when the policeman reportedly lost the control of the vehicle and veered off the expressway to the service lane , crashing into the victim , who was waiting by the roadside to board a bus .
“ The vehicle responsible for the death was driven by a drunken policeman who meandered from the expressway to the service lane jumping over the median distinguishing the two lanes . Number plate , RRS 317 LA ,” a Twitter user , @ Adavizealao , wrote .
He said the policeman had been arrested .
Another Twitter user , Joba , described the incident as tragic and urged the police not to brush the case under the carpet .
“ This is so sad . I hope the arrest is not just to keep him ( policeman ) safe until the heat has gone down ,” the poster said .
But a mechanic in the area , who identified himself only as Gabriel , said a siren attachment on the police vehicle fell on the road .

PUNCH Metro learnt that some residents responded to a distress call from Emmanuela and went after the assailant , while others rushed the victims to a hospital .

It was gathered that the assailant , who was arrested and identified as John , was a resident of the area .
He reportedly declined to open up to the police on why he attacked the victims .
The 54-year-old widow told our correspondent that John did not request any valuable from them .
She said , “ Around 2am on Tuesday , November 15 , my daughter and I were sleeping when we heard a bang on our door . As I opened the door to check what was happening , a masked man brought out a knife and said he had come to kill us .
“ Before I could utter a word , he pounced on me and stabbed me . My daughter rushed out of her room . She tried to unmask him , but he overpowered her and stabbed her at five different parts of the body . He escaped through the fence .”
Emmanuella said the suspect was tracked down at a neighbouring street , and was handed over to the police at the Isheri division .
