open to reveal the molten rock underneath. This would not be remotely possible due to the slow movement of the earth’s crust. Continents have in fact undergone drastic movement but the process took millions of years. Not to mention that there was no galactic alignment in 2012 that was out of the ordinary.
There were believers that a planet ‘X’, named Nibiru was on a collision course with the earth, or at least would pass close enough to disrupt life on earth by asteroid pulled along by the plant impacting the earth (Handwerk). NASA has confirmed however that there was no such planet, despite what past civilizations believed, since were it to exist modern astrologists would have detected it decades ago , and predicted its path (“The end of”).
The thing is, the notion of an apocalypse is not a new one. Religions spoke of it long before science did. The Bible predicts a n apocalypse, whose signs include war and famine and pestilence (“Seven signs”). The Qur’an also cites mass disasters and wars as signs of an impending apocalypse. So it is no wonder that many people readily accept the fact that it may have arrived so soon.
Of all of these possible scenarios and predictions, none were fulfilled. Humanity is still here, alive and well. And though we all held our breath for a
moment on the 21st of December 2012, no meteors showered down on us, the earth’s crust did not break open, no monster tsunamis washed over countries. In all honesty it was one of the most anticlimactic days of the year, because of all the unjustified hype. We can only hope that the next doomsday (not forgetting that there were supposedly ones in 1998 and 2000), will be just as disappointing in delivering the end of the world.
