JARED HO
I am at the park, sunglass-covered
even when there is no sun.
I buy a drink from the bodega
just to get that brown paper bag.
I cut a hole, exactly half a centimetre,
into one side of the brown paper bag.
I place my handphone inside at an angle
that lets the in-built camera to see through that
the man-made looking glass.;
the camera app is launched.
My neck is fixed, head surveying the park
for unsuspecting joggers breaking their sweat
as I break mine. As one pauses to catch their breath, I look at the distance as my thumb clicks the
camera icon on my phone. she continues to run; those big apples do not fall far from the tree.
I see a child on a tricycle, hands tugging at the handles as they swerve in odd directions across
the gravel. Their parent is there, keeping an eye out for people like me, but also looking out for
their own kind. I position my brown paper bag towards this family. grab a quick snap and wipe
the sweat off my palms.
