Environmental Scan 2017: Human Capital Issues within the Medical Devices Sector 3.1.3 Working Hours The normal working hours of full time employees in the surgical/medical gloves segment was on average 48 hours per week in 2016, with 83% of the companies in the segment required their employees to work more than 45 hours per week. The other medical consumables segment had an average normal working hours of 45 hours per week, while the non-consumables companies had the shortest normal working hours among all with 43 hours per week averagely and only 30% of the companies required their employees to exceed 45 normal working hours per week. On top of the slightly longer normal working hours, 40% of the surgical/medical gloves companies also required their employees to work more than 20 extra hours per week in 2016. This resulted in an average of 17 overtime working hours per week in the segment. On the other hand, the average overtime working hours for other medical consumables and non-consumables segment was only 7-8 hours per week within the same period. Although there is no direct correlation found between the company size and the length of normal working hours, it is noticed that larger companies tend to require longer overtime working hours to fulfil their business operation needs.
