IN EGYPT..
That is how factories affect air pollution in general.
Specifically speaking about Egypt though, the air
pollution in Cairo for instance is a matter of
serious concern. The air quality in downtown Cairo
is more than 10 to 100 times of acceptable world
standards. Cairo has a very poor factor because
of lack of rain and its layout of tall buildings and
narrow streets, which create a bowl effect (bad
ventilation and consequent trapping of pollutants).
The main air pollution problem in Egypt is the
particulate matter. Industry pollution is one of the
most notable sources. The increasing number of
factories in Egypt is not something that we should
be fond of. In fact, Aliya Abdel Shakour, who
heads the Air Protection Advisory Unit at the
National Research Center, says “We shouldn’t be
proud of all the cement and steel factories
established by Western countries in Egypt over
the past two decades”. Abdel Shakour also adds
that these highly polluting industries have ruined
the health of workers and nearby residents. There
is no specific factory in Egypt that contributes to
polluting the air, however, all factories that emit
gases are considered air polluting industries.
