Directed by Aaron Sorkin , follows the trial of the “ Chicago Seven ”, a group of “ radical left ” protesters being charged by the US federal government amidst high political tensions in the summer of 1968 the night of the Democratic National Convention . This film serves to inspire those whose voices are not being heard today to keep fighting despite the adversities and despite the system being rigged . All the defendants , eight men , from unaffiliated and separate organizations with different overall approaches to the political climate , are all indicted for allegedly crossing statelines with intent to incite a riot and conspiracy to do so . Sorakin did a wonderful job at emphasizing the injustice that the defendants ( Bobby Seale , Abbie Hoffman , Jerry Rubin , David Dellinger , Tom Hayden , Rennie Davis , John Froines , and Lee Weiner ) experienced in the courtroom as accurate depictions that often frustrate and disgust the viewers , such as Bobby Seale being bound and gagged in court under the order of the judge . The Trial of the Chicago 7 beautifully depicts the historical accuracies of the trial , while maintaining true to current events . Sorkin ’ s film parallels today ’ s current political tensions with that of 1968 , amongst police brutality protests and society ’ s call for change in a political “ war ” between the left and the right , and he began film production , inspired after Trump ’ s election . Main cast : Sasha Baron Cohen , Eddie Redmayne , Yahya Abdul-Mateen II , Jeremy Strong Director : Aaron Sorkin
