THE HUMANITARIAN ISSUE
If a young black girl is wanting to pursue a career in the makeup industry , what advice would you have for her ?
the things that I really wanted to do because when I ’ m able to do and get where I ’ m going , I ’ m bringing everybody with me because I ’ m not keeping secrets .
A motto of yours is “ Perfection is not required .” What does this statement mean to you ?
So , as a Virgo , well , you know of course not all Virgos , we have our perfectionist ways . It sometimes can get in the way of life . Let me just take it out of just Virgos , like people in general . If we don ’ t feel like it ’ s perfect , we don ’ t do it , or it takes forever for us to do it . You don ’ t have to have every single hair in place , every single lashing place , have perfect foundation , you know , because I want to see you . That ’ s what my thing is , who are we and why can ’ t we show ourselves ? I don ’ t want to see the mask , I want to see who you are because that to me is what makes you perfect , is your own imperfection , or what you think is your imperfection .
What progress have you seen so far , since the Black Lives Matter movement ramped up as well as COVID , and what changes do you feel , still need to be made ?
I mean , in terms of progress , it ’ s still early to say , because you know it was still in it . Outside of the statements that everyone was making like that I did feel like a lot of the statements were very boilerplate where everyone was listening and learning . While you ’ re listening and learning , that ’ s all well and good , but also be in the background because making sure you ’ re doing stuff too . My goal is to disrupt these supply chains because that to me is really where cultural wealth comes from and where we are breaking the chains with economic wealth in this country because I feel like it ’ s great for us to own these companies , these businesses , I love it . But getting into manufacturing and distribution , that is where the key is , and also like formulating . Being at the top of the food chain , you know ? Like being the ones to create the patents . I feel like that ’ s where real change can happen .
So , I feel like when I answer this question I ’ m talking to my younger self . When I say this , I say honestly , no permission is needed on that level . Just go for it . If you ’ re a shy person , you know , stick that chest out and just go through that concrete wall . I think that that is what I would like to tell the younger people . I feel like a lot of the younger people are doing . I feel like they ’ re not asking for permission , which I think is amazing , because when I came along , you know , we were very much assistants . I will also say that I feel like a lot of people when they ’ re creating a lot of people look at other people ’ s work a little too much . Like definitely you can look at reference points , but what is your style ? Who are you , and I want to know like I want to know , what do you bring to the table , what ’ s your voice and not to lose that . So , I would say like , definitely keep a sense of self , but go for it , you know , don ’ t allow anybody to take your dream away .
