The Redeemer’s Feast is a deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment, thanks to the
Saturday night phantasmagorical fireworks’ display attracting thousands of visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades, from a
game of light and colours on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basilica, lights up the spires, domes and bell towers
of the city.
Its history dates back to 1577 to celebrate the end of a massive plague outbreak, celebrated with the built of the
stunning church of the same name on the Giudecca Island. Today its religious and cultural origins melt into a unique
event on the third weekend of July. Enjoy the celebration of the Holy Mass followed by boat parades and
Venetian-style dinners all while waiting for the pyrotechnic show to begin. The Palio event is much more than just a tourist event, it's part of Siena's life since its inception.
The most important event organized in the city from the 13th Century takes place every year on July 2nd in honor of
the Madonna of Provenzano, and on August 16th, Palio dell’Assunta, in honor of the Assumption of Mary. Every year
ten fierce Contrade of seventeen are admitted to the field and aspire to the prestigious title. Each Contrada corresponds
to a certain district of Siena and is characterized by a unique coat of arms and colours. Walking through the streets of
Siena you can easily recognize them and immerse yourself in a special atmosphere in the days before the races.
