BUSINESS PLAN HIGHLIGHTS
CITY REBUILDING FIVE RESIDENTIAL STREETS IN EAST
ARLINGTON ✅
The Public Works and Transportation Department is pleased to announce that construction on five residential streets in East Arlington began this summer . Beginning in July , contractors began rebuilding the following streets :
• Brookshire Street ( from Carter Drive to Greenway Street )
• Catalo Lane ( from Carter Drive to SH360 )
• Hensley Street ( from S . Collins Street to Moore Terrace )
• Randolph Street ( from Sunnyvale Drive to Lackland Street )
• Stonegate Street ( from Carter Drive to Buena Vista Drive )
This project is part of the City ’ s program to rebuild residential streets throughout the City that have deteriorated beyond general maintenance . In February 2013 , City Council approved a new “ Do Worst First ” street condition philosophy to prioritize street projects . Fundamental elements of this philosophy are :
• Streets with an Overall Condition Index ( OCI ) below 50 , are in failure , and should be addressed first .
• Street maintenance work will be prioritized toward the worst streets first .
• Rebuild work will be done on both thoroughfares and residential streets , with thoroughfares given higher priority when choices between the two must be made .
The following improvements are occuring :
• Rebuilding the asphalt roadway to a concrete surface with an expected useful life of 50 years
• Construction of sidewalks ( excluding Catalo Lane ) with ADA compliant ramps
• Streetlight improvements
• Rebuilding driveways to the right-of-way
• Stormwater drainage infrastructure improvements
• Water and sanitary sewer infrastructure improvements
Funding for this project was approved by Arlington voters as part of the $ 137 million Street Improvements package included in the 2018 Bond Election . This project aligns with the City Council ’ s priority to Enhance Regional Mobility and Champion Great Neighborhoods .
FY21 Enhance Regional Mobility Business Plan Update
In FY2021 , the overall number of lane miles in the City with an OCI below 50 increased from 377 to 390 . This increase is due to 65 road segments moving from yellow to red . With the passage of the 2018 Bond Election and continued focus on maintenance of red streets , the target is to reduce the FY 2015 baseline number of 326 red lane miles to achieve a more balanced network .
