Updates Residential Street and Sidewalk Projects The Public Works and Transportation Department will soon be starting two new construction projects aimed at improving roadways and aging public infrastructure in central Arlington. Phase 2 of the 2017 Residential Rebuild project and the 2019 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Residential Street and Sidewalks projects will bring much needed improvements for residents on the targeted streets. Work to be completed under Phase 2 of the 2017 Residential Rebuild project will continue the rebuilding efforts begun in spring 2018. Phase I of the project made improvements to sections of Inwood, Southmoor, and Rayborn Drives and is expected to be completed by May 2019. Phase 2 will consist of water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater improvements, replacing the asphalt road with a concrete roadway designed to last 50 years, and street light and sidewalk improvements on sections of the following streets: • • • • • East Third Street (South Center Street to Mary Street) Hosack Street (South Center Street to Mary Street) Ray Street (South Center Street to Mary Street) Rose Street (South Mesquite Street to Mary Street) Mary Street (East Mitchell Street to Ray Street) The 2019 CDBG Residential Street Rebuild and Sidewalk project will rebuild East Second Street from South Cooper Street to Mary Street and Kelly Terrace from South Collins Street to East Park Row Drive. In addition to roadway, water, sewer, stormwater, and street light improvements, this project includes the installation of new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian ramps. Construction of this project is expected to begin in spring 2019 and be completed by the end of the year. Collins Street Widening Near Interstate 20 In May, the Public Works and Transportation Department will begin transforming South Collins Street between Mayfield Road and Interstate 20 (I-20) as part of a $4.5 million construction project designed to ease congestion and improve infrastructure in southeast Arlington. This project will consist of widening Collins Street by constructing two additional lanes and adding southbound right turn lanes at both Arbrook Boulevard and I-20. Additional improvements include replacing existing concrete panels as needed; adjusting water and sanitary sewer facilities; replacing traffic signals, street lights, pavement markings, street signs, sidewalks, and fiber conduit; and median landscaping and irrigation improvements. Construction is anticipated to be completed in early 2020. 7
