PUBLIC WORKS TO BEGIN $ 10.8 MILLION 2022 MILL AND OVERLAY PROGRAM ✅

In October 2022 , the City of Arlington ’ s Public Works Department began work on a $ 10.8 million project to create smoother drives for commuters and extend the lifespan of 29 street segments through the recently approved 2022 Mill and Overlay Program .
This program , funded by voter-approved Street Maintenance Sales Tax revenue , is designed to resurface , and otherwise maintain asphalt streets with an Overall Condition Index ( OCI ) rating between 50 and 65 .
The mill and overlay process allows the City to improve more lane miles and is more cost effective than rebuilding the roadway . The asphalt milling and overlaying process includes milling existing asphalt pavement , repairing road base failures , and resurfacing the roadway with a new two-inch asphalt surface course . Other improvements may include replacing sections of dilapidated concrete curb , gutter and drive approaches on streets that are selected for the maintenance work .

HARRIS ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

Initially scheduled to be completed in October 2022 , work on the project was delayed due to unanticipated issues during the relocation of franchise utilities infrastructure . The project is now scheduled to be completed in May 2023 . To date , the contractor has completed the installation of 9,750 linear feet of water lines , 4,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer lines , 4,000 linear feet of storm drainage infrastructure , and other associated infrastructure .
Upon completion of the underground infrastructure improvements , the contractor will begin roadway paving operations . Roadway work scheduled to be completed includes :
• Reconstructing Harris Road from a two-lane asphalt roadway to a three-lane concrete roadway with an estimated useful life of 50 years
• Modifications to the intersection of Harris Road and Cooper Street and installation of new traffic signals
• Construction of sidewalks and ADA compliant pedestrian ramps
• Street light improvements
• Pavement markings

To minimize traffic congestion and increase public and contractor safety , Harris Road , from Cooper Street to Calender Road , will remain closed to all eastbound traffic . The road will remain open to westbound traffic . As construction progresses and the need for certain types of heavy equipment and materials changes , city staff will reevaluate whether the roadway can be safely reopened to two-way traffic .
Arlington voters approved funding for this project as part of the 2014 Bond Election Street Improvements Package .
