“New Year’s resolutions are
a way to view yourself as a
diamond in the rough.”
9 Steps
TO CREATING YOUR VISION
& MAKING IT STICK
by Kristin M. Wistar
January is here, and with it comes the often-
dreaded resolution time. To create a change from
a lighter, easier perspective, perhaps approach
things differently this year. Instead of creating
resolutions from a place of lack, limitation, guilt, or
shame, consider asking yourself this: What is my
best interest for the highest good? In other words,
what can you do to improve the meaningful
strengths you already have?
Recognize that you can choose to transform
yourself into more of what you already are, instead
of thinking that you are broken or that you need
to change yourself into something you’re not.
Michelangelo once stated that when he carved
David, he freed David’s image from the stone
that surrounded him. Much like this, New Year’s
resolutions are a way to view yourself as a diamond
in the rough, one that has been covered in layers of
mud; the dirty layers just need to be wiped away for
your brilliance to shine. To do this, though – to dig
deep and uncover your heart’s desires – you’ll need
to do some inner and outer work.

environment and
get centered.
Set up your surroundings to
support you as you go on your
inward journey. Give yourself
time to be alone without
interruption. Grab a notebook
and pen, make yourself a cup of
tea, turn on some quiet music, or
light a fire.
Start with a short meditation
to clear your mind and get into
your heart. Close your eyes
and take some deep breaths,
noticing your breathing, pulse,
and how your muscles relax.
Let go of any expectations
and envision calmness and
peace. This guides you to
dial into the part of you that
knows; your higher self, your
heart space. From this place,
you are connected to infinite
possibilities, where answers
are more abundant and readily
available.
2 What are your
dreams?
Write down five dreams you
have had, based on these time
frames:
•
•
•
Past: What were your
dreams growing up, as a
child or young person?
Present: What are your
current dreams today?
Future: What do you dream
for your future?
Circle the dreams that stand
out to you.
3 Write down your
goals.
Close your eyes again and tune
back into your heart. Remember,
let go of any expectations you
have. Ask yourself, what does
my heart desire right now? Let
go of your limitations – if there
was nothing holding you back,
what would your dream for?
