Extra: Who was Al Capone?
By Abby Bass
Al Capone was a famous mobster from the 1920's. During the 1920's, there was a new law that prohibited the distribution and intake of alcohol. One of Al Capone's jobs was to get alcohol and distribute it to special people or have speakeasies. He was famous for what he did and how he lived with the money he made off of it. For the majority of his career, he was loved by the public, most who knew about what he did.
It was not until later in his career until the public started to change their minds. One major thing that changed public opinion about Al Capone is the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. This was when Al Capone supposedly had his men hill seven of his rivals men. After this, the public wanted him arrested.
He was arrested on the grounds of income-tax evasion. This meant that the government said that the money Al Capone was making off of his illegal activites was taxable and he hadn't been paying them. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Alcatraz but was moved to a mental health facility and later moved to Miami to live out his final days.
