The ESTA - the European
association for the abnormal
transport and mobile crane rental
industry – was established in
1976. Currently the organisation
has members in 18 European
countries. The ESTA has excellent
connections with the suppliers
of equipment for heavy transport
and crane suppliers. Ton Klijn
joined Mammoet-Stoof in 1977
and he was managing director at
Wagenborg-Nedlift from 2003
to 2017. Since July 2017 he is
director at ESTA.

My father taught me that you have to work to earn a crust. Even
on the Saturday before Christmas we had to do the rounds to
deliver bread. Hard work, but I didn’t mind.

Cooperation in Europe seems simple, but in practice if often
breaks down due to all sorts of national interests.

WAS UP TO YOU?
It would be my wish that the rules that countries agree on are
enforced too. Without enforcement the authorities lose their
credibility.
5  WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS FOR THE
HEAV Y TRANSPORT INDUSTRY IN EUROPE GOING TO BE
IN THE FUTURE?
I hope that the politicians will be able to improve the
infrastructure for abnormal transport. Countries that protect
their own markets constitute a threat.
