The Meet Cute : They met online during the height of COVID in 2020 . They both had just moved to New England to prepare for ( virtual ) school when it was almost impossible to meet people in person . They made the best of it . “ We joked that the dating app we used should feature us as a ‘ success story ,’” says Rainy .
The Engagement : The couple had a photo shoot planned in Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis . Paul had prepped everything , including securing an engagement ring from his friend ’ s family business . As much as he tried to keep it a surprise , Rainy suspected something was up . It was a busy day in the public park , and when Paul proposed and Rainy said “ Yes ,” people nearby joined in the excitement by clapping and cheering for them .
The Venue : They preferred to host the reception on Aquidneck Island because of Paul ’ s connection to the area . He had lived in Newport for a year while serving in the Marine Corps . After researching a few different venues , they felt that Glen Manor House was a perfect fit , with its French chateau-style home overlooking the Sakonnet River and beautiful gardens . The team executed their custom theme , with many Chinese elements , to a “ tea .”
The Reception : The reception ’ s color scheme was red and gold to match the traditional Chinese elements . The couple mailed invitations to guests that were custom-made in China with red and gold lettering and Chinese patterns . A special table at the reception displayed decorations including a “ wedding book ” written in traditional calligraphy , “ lucky candies ” that are a traditional Chinese favor for guests , desserts called “ lucky pastries ,” red envelopes and chopsticks . For the reception , Rainy changed into her traditional Chinese dress — Xiu He — with Chinese hair accessories . The couple also incorporated a Chinese tea ceremony honoring both sets of parents as “ mom ” and “ dad ,” and in return , the parents handed the bride and groom red envelopes filled with money .
