October 12, 2018 | Blueflash Photography Olga & Caleb The Meet Cute: Our Engaged 2020 cover stars met as freshmen in high school, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there. “He thought I was loud and annoying, I thought he was short and rude... Being fourteen is just dandy,” Olga laughs. Luckily, they got their act together by senior year. The Engagement: Caleb popped the question one day after the bizarre Snow Bombogenesis hit the East Coast in January 2018. “It was the coldest day of our lives,” Olga recalls. “He proposed at the Boston Commons in front of the huge Christmas tree in two feet of snow.” The Planning: Olga was studying abroad in Sydney at the time — in fact, she returned Down Under just two days after the proposal. “So, my least favorite part of planning was trying to communicate with vendors with a sixteen-hour time difference!” she says. But though there were some lows, there were also some highs. “My favorite part was making our playlist — I’m a pretty simple girl, so I wasn’t going too wild with details. I just knew we needed to have a good time!” The Venue: “I actually grew up in Wrentham and went to Lake Pearl for an eighth-grade retreat,” Olga recalls. “It’s sort of silly, but I remember seeing the boathouse and thinking, ‘Hmm, maybe I’ll get married there one day.’” It was the first venue she and Caleb toured after getting engaged, and afterwards they never felt the need to look elsewhere. The Photographer: Caleb had worked for Blueflash Photography as their ‘blue-cube guy’ (a.k.a. photo booth operator) since high school. And so, picking their photographer came easy. “Blueflash is family to us,” Olga says. “Stunning work, easy to work with, excellent in every way!” The Aisle Thoughts: “I felt like the boathouse had become a platform in space, and that the whole universe showed up to see her.” — Caleb “Hah! Caleb’s always been the poet-romantic. Meanwhile, my brain was shouting, ‘Olga don’t trip. Olga don’t trip. Olga don’t trip,’ as I gripped onto my mom and step-dad tightly.” — Olga The Guestbook: “We tried to send each other postcards while I was living in Sydney,” Olga explains. “There’s something so romantic and timeless about a love postcard.” So, when she found a bulk vintage set on Etsy, she ordered them right away with the idea that her guests would fill them out at the reception. “They were one of my favorite wedding details,” she says. “We have them all in a glass box in our living room and they are fun to look at!” The Highlights: “Our first look was precious and pure — we both were acting like giddy kids. Also, our last dance was to Mulan’s ‘Make a Man Out of You’ and the dance floor was full of people doing pushups and being crazy. It was a perfect ending to a perfect night.” — Olga The Advice: “Focus on what’s important to you as a couple! I love how ‘us’ our wedding was,” Olga says. “Every couple has their things they love — are you a pie lover? Then serve pie, not cake! Focus on those things and you’ll be sure to leave your guests with a great memory of what it was like celebrating you.” 130 | ENGAGED IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND 2020
