hair & makeup Q & A with Ali Lomazzo, owner of Ali Lomazzo Beauty When to book: If brides are looking to do trials before securing a company, we suggest setting one up as soon as you think you may want to book that company (a.k.a. earlier than six months in advance of your wedding). If you would like to secure the company first and then do a trial once you have a better idea of what you want, we suggest doing the trial one to three months before the wedding. Why are trials important? 1. You want to make sure that you like your stylist. They may have great work but a difficult personality, or vice versa. 2. You want to make sure that their aesthetic is what you are looking for. 3. You can ensure that the look you already have in mind is what you actually want. Sometimes brides have certain styles pinned on their Pinterest boards but they don't actually like the way it looks on them, so we figure out another approach during their trial. What questions do you ask brides during consultations? For makeup: Do they have any allergies or sensitivities?; do they normally wear makeup and if so, what?; is there anything they definitely do not want to wear?; and finally, do they have dry, oily or combination skin? For hair: We ask if they like volume, if they like to keep a part in their hair or do they want it straight back, etc. These questions really help us get a good idea of what aesthetic the bride is going for. Also, pictures of their favorite looks are extremely helpful! Have you noticed any new trends? Textured French twists and updos that go straight back with texture have been huge this year. As far as Flowers By makeup goes, most of our brides are looking for glowy skin. My favorite look this season has been fresh, glowy skin with a pop of eye color and a textured updo. What advice do you have for brides-to-be? Do your research. Make sure the work you see correlates with what you are looking for. We have had many brides come to us after they weren't happy with a trial somewhere else or, worse, after a stylist canceled on them last minute. Make sure you love the stylist’s work before booking them and make sure you sign a binding contract. Any professional wedding hair/makeup stylist will have you sign a contract — if they don't, that’s a red flag.
