Letters...

Dear Editor I read the last issue of engage with interest as it was the first time I had seen the magazine. I’ ve since heard great things about the networking events. The article that really caught my eye was the one regarding the British Chambers of Commerce. I am a fairly new( BAME) startup and I’ m always looking for information which will help me to grow and develop my business. I must admit that I had viewed the Chambers of Commerce as rather‘ dry’ and old fashioned until I read the article. I certainly was not aware of their wide remit in terms of the services that they provide.
I am now going to look into the possibility of joining my local( LB Newham) chamber. By the way, is there any chance that a speaker from the BCC could attend a future networking event, or perhaps a joint venture could be arranged? I’ m sure other readers would find it useful.
Keep up the good work! Best wishes Jasmine Phillips
Dear Jasmine Thank you for your comments and delighted to know you enjoyed engage magazine. I would recommend you do join your local chambers as they have a wealth of information and advice available. Your point regarding speakers at our networking
events is very useful. At engage, will always try to cater for the needs of our BAME business-owners and we will certainly pursue a speaker from BCC for one of our future events.
Dear Editor I know that hindsight has 20 / 20 vision, but I really wish that I’ d read Rasheed Ogunlaru’ s piece on‘ Building Successful Partnerships’, sooner. We run a small but well established training company and recently we were fortunate enough to be invited to be a partner in a bid with a large training company. We were so pleased to be written in to the bid( because everyone knows that for some large training providers, the bidding process is an academic exercise), that we did not attend to the basics identified by Rasheed.
The editor would probably need to give me my own page to go into the full detail of how we learned the error of our ways, but the bottom line is this:
The bid was successful- of course, but, although we had signed a partnership agreement, we did not check the credentials of the lead partner.
Consequently, when the funding body decided to withdraw the contract( due to previous unresolved issues with our lead partner), we had already invested a considerable amount of time and money preparing to deliver a contract that is now not going to happen. We live and learn.
Anyway, congratulations on another great issue. Yours sincerely Geofrey Gordon
Dear Editor I was given a copy of engage magazine at an event I attended recently in Brixton which was about‘ guns and knives’. I assumed, until I read the magazine, that it would be about social issues facing young BME people. That’ s because the majority of the literature on display that evening had a social context. Your magazine was such an uplifting surprise. I’ m not in business, but having read the magazine I now want to be an entrepreneur! I’ ve subscribed to the magazine and am looking forward to attending your networking events. So, really, just to say thank you for being so inspiring.
All the best Sharon Sinclair
Dear Editor Big up engage. Have only seen issue 4. Loved every bit of it. Keep it coming. Tre Powell
