Engage magazine celebrated its first birthday last month , so congratulations and thanks to all in the team who have chased the stories and organised superb networking events . Thanks also to our supporters , PwC , EDF Energy , Lehman Brothers and Lloyds TSB who kindly hosted engage networking events over the last quarter . Your commitment to the supplier diversity agenda is much appreciated and we look forward to working with you , and others later in the year .
This issue has a special focus on young people in politics . Recent statistics reveal there has been steady decline in the number of young people , aged 18-24 who vote , 68 % in 1997 compared to only 37 % in 2005 . We hope the vision and views of current and future politicians , featured in this magazine , will encourage BAME business owners and young people to recognise how their proactive engagement in the political arena can really help to influence and change the society in which we live .
There is a plethora of business ethnic minority networks spread right across London and the UK , representing different minority groups . Some are featured in this issue . Engage UK Networks will continue to work in partnership with these business communities as we all share the same challenges and vision . We want to grow , and we want to contribute to the economic legacy for the capital . 2012 looms , and so does our ‘ once in a lifetime ’ opportunity to have a piece of the pie . Please , can Government and other public / private sector organisations review their procurement policies - there are still significant barriers that are preventing small London firms from participating in the multibillion pound procurement process supporting the Games and beyond . The turnover of companies in London with fewer than 50 staff is estimated to be almost £ 200 billion , which is equivalent to 35 per cent of the total for London 1 , definitely a force to consider and reckon with .
We look forward to receiving your comments and contributions .
