PARLIAMENTARY FOCUS 37

House of Commons

Dawn Butler MP

Featured on the front cover and providing the foreword for this issue which has a special focus on young people in politics, is Dawn Petula Butler, Member of Parliament for Brent South.

Dawn was elected in the 2005 General Election and in her maiden speech, she said she would be a voice for youth. Butler was clearly heard by the powers that be, with Gordon Brown, who became Prime Minister on 27th June 2007 making Dawn one the Labour Party’ s six Vice Chairs, with particular responsibility for youth issues. Delighted with this new position Dawn said“ I believe that re-engaging with young people needs to be one of our top political priorities. We need to show young people how politics can be relevant to their lives and how their campaigns can be the drivers for real change and improvements in their communities”. Engage UK wish Dawn the best of luck in her challenges ahead....
