Editor ’ s Letter
Since our last issue , we have successfully held three networking events hosted by PwC and Merrill Lynch , enabling minority-owned businesses to directly tackle concerns around contract opportunities with the relevant procurement teams .
We have received very positive feedback on this platform and we are looking forward to holding further events at EDF Energy , Lehman Brothers and Lloyds TSB in the next two months . It is paramount that more large organisations follow the lead of these highly successful corporates , and wake up to the call to get involved ; review current procurement policies and recognise the benefits to be derived from casting the widest possible net in seeking qualified ethnic minority suppliers . This will have the added benefit of enlarging your customer base and enhancing your reputation as a socially responsible company .
In this issue we have a special focus on young ethnic minority entrepreneurs . An estimated 6.1 % of businesses in London are run by young people under the age of thirty . 1 We hope you find their stories interesting and inspirational .
It has become evident that there is the need for ethnic minority micro and small businesses to start forming consortiums in order to tender for , and secure , those large contracts that will be on offer leading up to 2012 and beyond . I encourage BAME business-owners to use engage networking events to meet likeminded businesses and start building those relationships now .
Engage will continue to keep you abreast of the latest news and developments surrounding supplier diversity and procurement opportunities in the UK
We look forward to receiving your comments and contributions .
